Secondhand Scores #11

When I was a kid my parents went to garage sales all the time.  I admit I was totally embarrassed by it.  I never really bothered going regularly until after I had my son.  I realized I could get clothes and toys and things for him for pennies on the dollar and that is when my love for secondhand was born.

Garage sales are my favorite but I also go to flea markets, thrift stores and auctions.  I am always on the hunt for furniture to paint, stuff for myself, my house, my kids and unique items that I could put to future use.  I love the thrill of finding something that was once very expensive for as little money as possible.

In this series, I will share my scores to show you how much you could get for your hard earned money.  Some days I hit jackpots, some days I get nothing, but I always have fun.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It was a very good weekend for some secondhand scores!

Friday morning one of my neighbors had some stuff at their curb.

My husband claimed both stools to use in the garage at his work bench.  I took the cart with wheels to use at the flea market.  It folds flat so I can get it in my car.  This thing is going to be awesome because it is a real pain to have to go back to my car to drop stuff off when I am at the flea market.

For the Saturday garage sales, I wasn't able to get out of my house until 9:30!  I don't mind getting to sales late, I feel I can bargain more, but sales end around 11 in my area, so I had to be quick.

The wood plaques were $.50 each--these are really big ones.  I was able to bargain the circle chair from $5 to $3 for my son's room.
The rusty bucket was bargained down from $3 to $2.  The inside is in good condition and I am going to use to store my DIY powder laundry detergent I made the other week (I love that stuff and wish I made it a long time ago).  The popsicle mold was $.25.  The rest I got at a sale that everything was half off--since it was at the end of their sale.  Phantom of the Opera DVD was $.50, Nicholas Sparks book $.25 and the brand new Isotoner slippers were $1 (original sticker price $28!).

On my way back from the sales I found a truck with a huge FREE sign on it.  It took me a second to realize it wasn't the truck that was free, but the dresser that was inside the truck.  Either way I had already slammed on my brakes.

A gorgeous waterfall dresser in really awesome condition was behind that sign!  All the handles are there with no missing bits!  I am so excited to have found a dresser!  I have been stuck painting tables for way too long!  I even passed up three cheap tables this weekend because I have so many around and I just don't want to paint them anymore!

Sunday was the bi-monthly Leesport Flea Market and the furniture auction.  I didn't score anything at either one, but I still enjoyed myself going to them.

  10. I sincerely hope that you do NOT paint that gorgeous dresser that is in such good shape. Please please analyze if you can touch up the original finish or, failing that, put new wood-tone finish on it. It would be a shame to gunk up those beautiful lines and that veneer with paint.
