Secondhand Scores #15

When I was a kid my parents went to garage sales all the time.  I admit I was totally embarrassed by it.  I never really bothered going regularly until after I had my son.  I realized I could get clothes and toys and things for him for pennies on the dollar and that is when my love for secondhand was born.

Garage sales are my favorite but I also go to flea markets, thrift stores and auctions.  I am always on the hunt for furniture to paint, stuff for myself, my house, my kids and unique items that I could put to future use.  I love the thrill of finding something that was once very expensive for as little money as possible.

In this series, I will share my scores to show you how much you could get for your hard earned money.  Some days I hit jackpots, some days I get nothing, but I always have fun.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I literally just told my husband I am not going to buy anymore furniture until I paint every piece in my stash, but I stumbled upon these tables at a garage sale on Friday...
She was only asking $5 a table!  How could I pass them up?  I stood there staring at them thinking about how I was going to justify bringing them home.  I was about to force myself to leave without them when the woman said if I wanted the tables I can have all three for $10!  I would have regretted it every day for the rest of my life if I did not buy them!  Or at least that is what I told my husband--ha!

The next sale over was selling plants for $2 a bundle.
I got two bunches each of Cone Flowers, Black Eyed Susans and purple Irises. Can you believe I paid more for the flowers than the tables?

On Sunday I went to an auction that also has a flea market in the same location.  The auction started at 1 pm and so the flea market was just finishing up.  One of the vendors was giving stuff away that he didn't want to pack up.
I got a set of measuring spoons and three embroidery hoops (I will remove their 80's crafty treatment).
At the auction, I got this large framed art for $1.  I will most likely turn it into a chalkboard.

French Country Night Tables

I scored these tables from the Salvation Army.
I got both tables for $14.99 (plus tax)!  I couldn't believe it since the Salvation Army normally prices their furniture pieces MUCH higher.

I REALLY wanted these to have a French Country look and when I saw Rain on a Tin Roof's French Country dresser, I knew I had to do those colors.  I had a very light grey oops paint that I added black to it until it became a grey I liked.  I mixed it into DIY chalk paint and gave them two coats each.  I had already sanded the tops down, and after I painted them I stained the tops with Minwax Dark Walnut.

Once they were dry, I took some white paint and filled in the lines that were gold in the before picture.  I used a small artist's brush and had to do two coats.  I spray painted the hardware white.

I sure got my French Country look!

I love, love, love the way it came out!  The absolute best part is that there are TWO!!
These make me so happy!  They really turned out like I pictured in my head.
I added some cute fabric to the drawers.
The white is such a little detail, but adds so much to the overall look.  I thought it was going to take a lot more time to do than it did.  I am really glad I did it!

Secondhand Scores #14

When I was a kid my parents went to garage sales all the time.  I admit I was totally embarrassed by it.  I never really bothered going regularly until after I had my son.  I realized I could get clothes and toys and things for him for pennies on the dollar and that is when my love for secondhand was born.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Another amazing weekend to head out looking for some good deals.  It started on Friday with these scores...
At a garage sale I got the embroidery hoop, wood heart light switch cover and three packs of vinyl letters and numbers for $.50 total.  I stopped at the Salvation Army and got the set of four cake pans for $4 and the mini crock for $.50.

Saturday I went to a bunch of garage sales.

The table was $1 and the five mason jars were $1 total. I was able to make a mason jar soap dispenser with a pump that I already had.  I traced a dime on the lid and then used a hammer and a nail to punch holes really close together around the circle so it would pop out. The pump fit perfectly, but I did also glue it.  The rust on the lid just adds to the charm, although if I find new lids at a garage sale, I will probably replace it.

The alphabet stencils were $.50 for both.
The animal stencils were $1 each.  I thought they were expensive, but I couldn't get them for less and I want to use them to make water color paintings that Elise from Grow Creative did. It didn't come out nearly as nice as Grow Creative, but I think with some more practice I will get better.  I also did a PA Dutch stencil and made it into a card.

Claw Foot Table

Some pieces just don't inspire me.  Like this table...
I couldn't see what color it should be, it needed some repair work that I didn't feel like doing, and I just didn't like it.

My husband was doing some garage organization and I asked him if he could give me a few shelves in a cabinet that my dad gave us for my paints.  He was able to give me the whole thing!

It makes me so happy!  I was able to organize it with all my supplies.  I used to have all this in my craft room in a much smaller shelf unit and would have to keep going back and forth between it and the garage to get stuff.  I would also have to keep taking everything off the shelves to find what I needed, so this stuff was mostly on my work table in a big mess.

Now that all my supplies were at my fingertips, I got inspired.  I wanted the table to be a light color so I could glaze it to bring out all the details on the trim, but I was worried about bleed through.

I went with an oops paint that has amazing coverage (that I happen to have a quart of) in a very light blue/grey color that I used on the first two tables from my assembly line of tables.  I was confident it would work and not have to deal with bleed through.

It SO worked for this table!  I painted it with two coats of the color in DIY chalk paint and then distressed the heck out of it. Not that much came off, but there was a lot of detail to the table just from being so old.

I glazed it Martha Stewart Metallic Glaze in Black Coffee.  I globbed it on with cheese cloth one area at a time and then went back with a clean cloth to wipe off the excess.

Look at all the places the glaze was able to get into and highlight!  The trim came out great like I thought it would, but I really love how the legs and their deep grain took the glaze.  The table top and shelf also got so much since they were scratched and marked up.

Now I like this table...A LOT!
