Orange Side Table

The backing on this table was already coming off.  I gave a few more tugs and the whole thing popped off with no damage.
Because the backing was off, I wanted to cover it with fabric.  I went through my stash (nice word for hoard) which consists of various sizes and patterns of fabric I find at garage sales for $.50 to $1.

Once I decided on the fabric, I went to my paints to see what I had to match it.  I have a bunch of oops paint samples, one of which is an orange that matches the fabric perfectly!

I got that paint a long time ago and never thought I would use it for furniture, but it matched so perfectly I had to do it.

I mixed the orange into DIY chalk paint and painted two coats.  But before I painted, I sanded down the top to stain.  The top was in nice enough condition and I didn't want the piece to be too orange.

I stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut.  I lightly distressed the orange and finished it with Minwax Finishing Paste.
I Mod Podged the fabric to the back piece.  I liked how you see mostly yellow flowers with the orange centers.  I was able to put the backing on with my staple gun.
I also added the fabric to the drawer and you get more orange in here.  I think it came out very happy and fun for summer.

  1. This is a stellar re-do, far better than the original. That little piece is ready to go to college! A 'scrub top', is what it's called when you leave the natural wood stained top to a piece. It's one of my favorites, love the contrast.

  2. Great job. Learned a new phrase from Wilda: I think the scrub top was a great decision. Love the fabric, and the way you used it. I wouldn't have thought of orange for furniture but it works here. My only preference, and this is just me, would be not to do the distressing. I know its fans are legion, and it has its place, but I like a smooth paint job. But generally, I'm amazed at what a great job you did with this not very interesting little piece of furniture. It would be fun to have some flower-shaped pulls, or maybe blue for contrast. Thanks for the inspiration.

I like your orange. I bought the Terra Cotta Red (to do my beside table) and... it looks somewhat orange. But I love it.

  20. Wow, what a clever rescue mission for that orange side table! Turning it into a DIY project with chalk paint is such a creative solution. The fact that you sanded down the top to stain adds a beautiful touch, balancing out the color. It's amazing how a little bit of effort can transform a piece. Your attention to detail really shines through. I'm curious, did you have a specific color in mind for the stain? Side tables are such versatile pieces, and your project is proof of that!
