When I was a kid my parents went to garage sales all the time.  I admit I was totally embarrassed by it.  I never really bothered going regularly until after I had my son.  I realized I could get clothes and toys and things for him for pennies on the dollar and that is when my love for secondhand was born.

Garage sales are my favorite but I also go to flea markets, thrift stores and auctions.  I am always on the hunt for furniture to paint, stuff for myself, my house, my kids and unique items that I could put to future use.  I love the thrill of finding something that was once very expensive for as little money as possible.

In this series, I will share my scores to show you how much you could get for your hard earned money.  Some days I hit jackpots, some days I get nothing, but I always have fun.

Even though I planned to go to garage sales on Saturday, the flea market and a furniture auction on Sunday, I felt the need to stop by the Salvation Army Friday morning.

I am so happy I did because look what I scored for $14.99 for the pair--which is cheap for this store.  The paint on the tops is peeling off and I think that is why they were priced so low and still available (the matching dressers were marked sold).  I already sanded them off to be stained!

I scored all this between Saturday garage sales and the Sunday flea market.

The group of handles were $1 total.
The sand paper was $1 per pack.
The ceiling lamp was $2.

The pie plate and egg slicer were $1 each.
The little plates were $1.50 total.
The glass vase and wooden spatula were $.25 each.

Saturday I found these two tables at the curb of a neighbor's house.  They are press board, but I thought since they were free I didn't need to be so picky.  I can see these painted and distressed.  I am also going to try to decoupage fabric or paper on the tops since they are damaged.  I haven't done this before and I think it would be best to experiment on free stuff.

Finally on Sunday afternoon there was the bi-monthly furniture auction that I love to go to.  Even though there was a lot of pieces being auctioned off, I didn't get anything.

Assembly Line of Tables

I have become inundated with tables.  I had the idea to start an assembly line of five tables to make a dent in my stash. 

Here is the cast of characters.  (Table five was switched in on a whim and I didn't have a before shot of it.)  I sanded down all the tops and was able to stain all of them with Minwax Dark Walnut.

The first table was from the hoarder garage sale.  I used a blue/grey oops color that I mixed into homemade chalk paint.

This paint is Behr Premium Plus Self-Priming Interior Flat which was also low odor, zero VOC.  This paint was AMAZING!  The coverage was incredible, although I am sure that is what made it hard to distress.  I did do two coats, but probably could have gotten away with one.  I distressed and waxed with Minwax Finishing Paste.  

Since the coverage was so good, I thought this color would work great on this table and added it in.

This one only needed one coat and I distressed heavily.  I used the dark wax "glaze" technique and also a little stain on the drawer detail since I was having trouble getting the wax in all the crevices.  Can you believe they were both painted the same color?  

I painted the next two tables that I got at this auction with Valspar Pine Green mixed into homemade chalk paint.  After the three coats of paint, I distressed both and used the dark wax "glaze" technique.  The green color was a little too bright for my taste and the wax toned the color down a lot.

It will be interesting to know if someone buys both or if they sell separately (I priced them the same). 

I finally painted this table I got from the first auction I went to (in October) with three coats of Valspar Churchill Hotel Vanilla mixed into homemade chalk paint.  I distressed it and finished it with the dark wax "glaze" to give it more depth.

Because my furniture budget per piece is pretty low, I get a lot of tables since that what usually falls into my price range.  I still have quite a few to paint, but this freed up a lot of room (to buy more).

This weekend, a nearby neighborhood held their community garage sale.  There were SO many sales, almost too many!  They were from one end of the town to the other.  

At one of the first sales I went to I scored this:

A box load of HUGE burlap sacks!  There are at least 15 sacks with graphics on BOTH sides!  There were another five bags with nothing on them.  I got them all for $20!  Now this is only a deal if I can figure out what I am going to do with them, but I knew if I didn't get them I would regret it.  My first thoughts are curtains, pillow covers and upholstery--after I figure the best way to wash them!  Suggestions are welcome!

Even though there were so many sales, I didn't get much else.  I picked up that little stool on my own block for free at the end of someone's driveway.  I got the set of steak knives for $1 and a kerosene heater for my father for $15.

Sports Theme Redos

This desk was from the first auction I went to.  

My husband has been painting pieces here and there and wanted to paint the desk. He is a huge Giants fan and painted the door leading from our garage to our basement in Giants colors. 

That was his inspiration for these redos.  We live in PA, so he went with PA teams instead of the Giants.

Apparently Lowes has all sports team colors on file for you to get the colors mixed easy.  He used Eagles green, black and grey mixed into homemade chalk paint.

On the front drawer he added the team logo and it is actually a key chain that he got a local sports store and found the large sticker on the side at Wal Mart.  He did not distress (not his style) and waxed it with Minwax Finishing Paste.

He also painted a chair to match.  The chair was a roadside freebie.  We always have one or two laying around and it just makes it easier for a desk sell if you have a chair to match it.  

Right after he painted the desk, he chose to paint this small dresser that I got at the hoarder garage sale in the Phillies team colors.

This time he primed first and painted with latex paint without making into chalk paint.  I figured since he doesn't like to distress there is no point in using it as chalk paint.

The original knobs were floral so he replaced all but two with wood knobs he painted and then used the baseball knobs I got at the Salvation Army.  This dresser is really small, so he just used a small team sticker.  

These two pieces are going to make a little sports fan really happy!

Between a church sale and a few garage sales on Saturday and a trip to the Leesport Farmers Market Sunday Flea Market, I got these scores:

Top left: A large burlap lampshade for $1, the Little Mermaid movie poster for my daughter for $1, a set of three laminate shelves for $1.

Right: Rustic bucket, four bat wing handles and a roll of clear shelf paper were $1 total.  

Bottom left: A few yards of black & white hounds tooth fabric and pink & white gingham fabric for $.50 total, two ceramic knobs for $1, two brand new linen pillow shams for $2 and a bank money bag for $1. 

I have been seeing the money bags around a lot lately, but they are usually smaller or selling for more than $1.  I got it and made it into a small pillow for my bedroom since the red graphics pick up the red in my quilt.  I washed, ironed and stuffed it with some poly-fil and secured the top with safety pins and those cute buttons that were from my mom's stash of buttons.

My husband collects coins so I think it is cute to have.  It's kind of like a grain sack--maybe I started a new trend!  Maybe not...

Also on Sunday was the bi-monthly furniture auction.  This auction has been getting more and more people to attend as the weather gets nice, so I haven't been able to score too many pieces in my budget.  But since they fly through the auction in one hour, it's always worth going to.

I scored this mid century Lane cedar chest at the very end of the auction for $1.  It's in pretty rough shape, but I see it's potential!!  The top needs to be sanded and if the scratches didn't go too deep I will try to stain it.  The two holes (bullet? BB?) in the front don't go through to the cedar, I can just fill them in.  The inside is in perfect condition.  Ideas are swimming in my head as to what color to paint it and I can't wait to get started on it!
