Secondhand Scores #7

When I was a kid my parents went to garage sales all the time.  I admit I was totally embarrassed by it.  I never really bothered going regularly until after I had my son.  I realized I could get clothes and toys and things for him for pennies on the dollar and that is when my love for secondhand was born.

Garage sales are my favorite but I also go to flea markets, thrift stores and auctions.  I am always on the hunt for furniture to paint, stuff for myself, my house, my kids and unique items that I could put to future use.  I love the thrill of finding something that was once very expensive for as little money as possible.

In this series, I will share my scores to show you how much you could get for your hard earned money.  Some days I hit jackpots, some days I get nothing, but I always have fun.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

This weekend, a nearby neighborhood held their community garage sale.  There were SO many sales, almost too many!  They were from one end of the town to the other.

At one of the first sales I went to I scored this:

A box load of HUGE burlap sacks!  There are at least 15 sacks with graphics on BOTH sides!  There were another five bags with nothing on them.  I got them all for $20!  Now this is only a deal if I can figure out what I am going to do with them, but I knew if I didn't get them I would regret it.  My first thoughts are curtains, pillow covers and upholstery--after I figure the best way to wash them!  Suggestions are welcome!

Even though there were so many sales, I didn't get much else.  I picked up that little stool on my own block for free at the end of someone's driveway.  I got the set of steak knives for $1 and a kerosene heater for my father for $15.

  8. Hello Susan
I'm visiting from I Gotta Create hop. Awesome burlap bags, what a find. I love yard sales. We enjoy recycling somebody's old stuff into something better and new. I'm a basket junkie and yard sales are my best find spots. I buy them by the trunk loads and with paint, ribbons etc I have great decorations or gift baskets. Sorry, I'm rambling. I've enjoyed your blog and I'm your newest follower. Hope you will visit me and hopefully want to follow my blog also.

  10. Love those burlap sacks. I think that little stool would be so cute painted and then covered with one of the sacks.

  11. My wheels are turning on all the things I would do with those burlap bags. Upholstered chairs would be really cool. Or a floor poof! I would love if you would link up to my "Go Get Your Garage Sale On Linky Party"! http://www.brightgreendoor.com/2013/05/go-get-your-garage-sale-on-with.html

  12. wow, looks like you really struck pay dirt getting all those incredible sacks. I am green with envy. It'll be fun seeing what you make with those sacks. Better keep us all informed.
Love name of your blog, so cute and sweet. I agree with other commentor, cover stool with one of the sacks.
About washing them. I washed one I found, only on cold for a very short cycle, do not put them in the dryer. Don't wash too many at once, maybe 3 or 4 at most. You could let them sit in washer for about 10 minutes to soak if they're really dirty. then turn washer back on. Just be really careful not to twist them out of shape. I used Dawn to wash them, just a little as it will suds up like crazy in the washer.

  16. The bags are great. When I went to the worlds longest yard sale a guy was selling potato sacks and I only bought two. What was I thinking. I haven't used them because since I only have two I hold onto them for the "perfect" thing, never wanting to use them up. At least with a whole load of them you won't have that problem. Hope you dig in and enjoy creating some fun things with them.
